"Double Ball Hitting" Drill

February 2001

By: Dwayne Gifford

Step 1:

Hang a tarp on a fence or JUGS Protective Screen, have the Batter get into a ready position.

Step 2:

Coach will toss 2 balls into the air, one a yellow (jugs pitching machine ball) and the other a white regular baseball. As the coach tosses the balls into the air, coach will call a color that the batter is to hit.

Step 3:

Batter swings and makes contact with color called.

This drill teaches better hand eye coordination and will help the batter pick up the ball sooner from the pitchers hand. I do this drill with my players all the time using the Jugs Instant Screen at the field and my children at home with the Jugs Instant Back Stop. It is a little hard to do with softballs but it can be done, as I work this drill with daughter all the time using softballs. I have also used 2 balls the same color in the drill and called top or bottom. I found it be easier for the batter and coach to use 2 different colored balls then the same colored balls. =
