"Grounders Only" Drill

March 2001

By: Chris Jackson (Tulsa, OK)

Here is a drill that works your infielders defensively base-runners, and hitters. it is also very competitive and kids love that!

Step 1:

The team is divided into ONLY the infield positions. Outfielders will serve ONLY on offensive side of the team in this drill.

Step 2:

  1. The INFIELD AREA is all that is used. outfield area is out of play.
  2. A hitting tee is placed at home plate. The hitters MUST HIT GROUND BALLS.
  3. Any balls that land in outfield area prior to touching the ground of the infield are automatic outs for the offensive team. The ball is called dead and no runners may advance.
  4. Any fly ball or pop up is an automatic out. The base-runners may then advance at their own risk just like if the ball had been caught. Any line drive caught by an infielder is an out.
  5. Any ball misplayed by an infielder and gets to the outfield is a dead ball and player may advance one base. Any ball misplayed by an infielder stays in the infield and the ball is live.
  6. Any ball that lands in the infield and proceeds to the outfield is scored a base-hit. Batter gets a single and other runners move up one base.
  7. Each team gets six outs per turn at bat. These six outs constitute half of an inning.

METHOD OF SCORING

For every offensive and defensive play you execute correctly, one point is credited to your team. For every physical or mental error you commit, one point is subtracted from your teams score. The team with the most points at the end of the pre arranged innings is the winner.

This drill is very quick paced and gets a lot of players in game like situations. It also encourages player to hit for strategy and not to "free swing."
