"Magnificent Seven" Drill

July 2001

By: Chris Walker

Purpose:

  1. Forcing your infielders to make throws under pressure situations.
  2. Baserunning

Drill can be done inside or outside.

Step 1:

Coach places players at all the infield postitions, except pitcher.

Step 2:

Players who are not set up on the infield will be the base runners. Make sure that the runners are wearing batting helmets.

Step 3:

The Coach (who is standing at home plate) hits a ground ball to the third baseman.

Step 4:

The Baserunner (who is also standing at home plate) takes off running when the ball is hit. The baserunner will continue to run the bases until he reaches home plate. Emphasize to the runner to touch all bases.

Step 5:

The third baseman will field the grounder and throw the ball to first. The first baseman will throw the ball to the catcher. The catcher will throw the ball to the shortstop (who is covering second). The shortstop will throw the ball to first base. The first baseman will throw the ball to third base. The third baseman will throw the ball to the second baseman (who is covering second base). The second baseman will throw the ball to the home (hopefully forcing a play at the plate). If it works right all throws made to bases will coincide with the runner advancing to that base.

List of throwing order:

5-3
3-2
2-6
6-3
3-5
5-4
4-2

*Magnificent Seven because of the seven throws.
