"Passed Ball" Drill

May 2001

By: John Kendra (Charleroi, PA)

Purpose: To establish communications between the pitcher and catcher on wild pitches or passed balls.

Skill Level: Any level and can be used for baseball or softball.

Location: This drill can be used either indoors or outdoors.

Positions: Pitchers and Catchers. Catchers need to be in full gear.

Drill:

  1. Catcher lies on his stomach with hands over the back of his head.
  2. Pitcher throws ball to his right or left to simulate a passed ball or wild pitch.
  3. Pitcher calls now when ball goes by catcher. Then tells the catcher right or left(the catcher's right or left).
  4. Catcher then moves in the direction the pitcher has called and locates the ball and throws it back to the pitcher.
  5. It helps to have several catchers in gear to speed up the drill. Also all pitchers take turns throwing from the mound.
