"Quick Pick" Drill

October 2001

By: Anonymous

This drill can be used for right handed pitchers who want to improve their pick-off move to first base. It is appropriate for players who are old enough to play in a league which allows baserunners to take a lead from the bases all the way through college.

  1. Place a pitcher's plate(rubber) about one foot from a fence at an angle which would have the pitcher facing the fence when in the stretch position.
  2. Measure off first base in its proper position relative to the rubber.
  3. Have the pitcher come set and gently make a move to first base without touching the fence and throw to first.
  4. Increase tempo as the proper throwing position is mastered.

This drill will force the right handed pitcher to take the ball to his ear and snap trhow over to first base much the same as a catcher's thhrow to bases. Footwork, of course, must also be addressed because it is the most important element to a "nasty" right handed pick-off move to first base.
