"Relay Throwing" Drill

June 2000

By: Curt Daniels (Columbus, OH)

Equipment Needed: Balls, Bats, and Gloves

Step 1

Divide the team into two groups. One group in the field at pitcher, catcher, first base, second base, and third base. The second team lined up by the backstop.

Step 2

The pitcher (or coach for younger players) tosses the ball to home and the first hitter bunts the ball. The catcher or pitcher fields the ball and proceeds to throw the ball around to each base (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and home) two times before the player reaches home. If the player gets to home before the ball gets around twice, the hitting team gets 1 point; and if he does not, the hitting team gets 0 points for player.

Step 3

Each player takes a turn and the teams switch (from fielding to hitting.) Multiple innings can be played.

This drill teaches many important aspects of the game all in one drill. (e.g. Proper bunting technique and base running skills for the hitting team; and, throwing technique, accuracy and quickness, along with teamwork for the fielding team.) The drill can be adjusted for the age group.

You'll find that this drill motivates players to make accurate throws when they are in competition with their teammates and will greatly improve their skills.
