Square Drill

September 2007

By: Chase Mann

Objective: To improve the outfielder's ability to field ground balls, fly balls, line drives, and hit the cutoff man.

SETUP:

The coach will need about 5 to 6 balls. Two players spread about 25 feel apart on the foul line, with the coach between them. Two more outfielders get about 180-200 feet deep into CF, in line with the two players on the foul line. Two more players split the difference between the players on the foul line and the deep outfielders. All the players should form a rectangle, and the extra players should line up about 30 feet to the left of the right outfielder.

DIRECTIONS:

Starting with the outfielder on the right, hit him a fly ball, ground ball, or line drive. He fields the ball and makes an accurate throw to the cutoff man in his line, and he throws the ball to the player standing beside the coach. As the right outfielder throws the ball in, the coach hits a ball to the left outfielder. As the left outfielder throws the ball into his cutoff man, the coach hits a line drive or ground ball to the cutoff man on the right. He then hits a ball to the cutoff man on the left. The coach then repeats the sequence. After each fielder throws his second ball in, he will rotate to the next spot in the order. The players on the foul line feed the coach balls. As the players learn the rotation, you will be able to get in many reps in a short amount of time.

ROTATION ORDER:

  1. Right outfielder to Left outfielder
  2. Left outfielder to Left cutoff man
  3. Left cutoff man to Left side foul line
  4. Left side foul line to Right side foul line
  5. Right side foul line to Right cutoff man
  6. Right side cutoff man to End of line
