JUGS Sports | Newsletter 34: Ban the Ten-Run Rule

By Rob Nelson, Past Editor, The JUGS Newsletter

The ten-run rule serves no purpose in high school softball and baseball. If a team is ahead by ten runs after five innings, the umpire calls "time" and declares the team with the big lead to be the winner. Baseball is not boxing-Neither is Softball! High school sports are supposed to be a fun learning "experience." No one gets any experience when two innings are chopped off the end of a game. Ahead ten runs? Put in some reserve players for a couple of innings. Behind by ten? Do the same! Give some inexperienced players some game experience. There is nothing embarrassing about losing-but it is embarrassing to pack up the equipment and go home early. Let the players play—Let the games continue. Get rid of the ten-run rule!
